The Friedhof der Heimatlosen, the cemetery of the homeless, is a solemn place, a stark reminder of the dangers of the sea. It’s a small piece of land, nestled among the bustling streets of Westerland on Sylt. It was established in 1854 by Wulf Hansen Decker, the Strandvogt, or beach warden, who realized that the bodies of countless sailors who washed ashore were being left unattended. Previously, sailors who died at sea and drifted to Sylt’s shores were simply left to decompose.

The first burial on the Friedhof der Heimatlosen was in 1855. It was a sailor who had been found washed ashore the day before. The cemetery remained in use until 1905, when it was closed. In its time, 53 unknown sailors were laid to rest there. Each grave was marked with a plain wooden cross, engraved with the date of burial and the location where the body was found.

The history of the Friedhof der Heimatlosen tells a sad story of lives lost to the sea. It speaks of a time when Sylt was a bustling seafaring center, but also a dangerous one. The island was a constant reminder of the harsh reality of life at sea.

Take a moment to reflect on these unknown sailors. Their stories are lost to the depths of the sea, their faces forgotten, their names unknown. The Friedhof der Heimatlosen is a memorial to those who lost their lives and could never be returned to their homes. It is a somber reminder of the power of the sea, but also the quiet dignity of those who died at sea.
