Beneath that metal helmet atop the tower lies a tale of destruction and rebirth. Here we stand before the Friedenskirche, a Lutheran church with a story etched in concrete and faith. The Friedenskirche, or Peace Church, stands on Friedensplatz in Stuttgart. It serves as the parish church for the Evangelische Friedensgemeinde Stuttgart.
The first Friedenskirche was a neo-Romanesque beauty. It rose in the late 19th century. Architect Conrad Dollinger designed it with a double choir. Narrow galleries lined the interior. Wooden columns supported the ceiling. Consecrated in 1892, it was a proud landmark. The tower held sculptures of apostles and Christ blessing the city.
However, darkness fell during World War II. On October 19, 1944, bombs rained down. The Friedenskirche was engulfed in flames. Only the tower and outer walls survived the inferno. The rest of the church was reduced to ruins.
For years, the parish gathered in the community center’s hall. But the desire for a proper church never faded. In 1959, the parish council decided to build a new Friedenskirche. Architect Eberhard Hübner won the 1960 competition.
In 1962, the remaining sandstone walls were dynamited. Construction began in 1964. Hübner wanted to use natural stone. But the parish chose concrete. This decision made it the first church in Stuttgart built with concrete. The new Friedenskirche got a flat roof. A metal helmet replaced the old stone one on the tower.
The new Friedenskirche was consecrated in 1966. It could accommodate 700 worshippers. It also became a place of worship for a Korean parish and a Nambu parish.
Inside, the Friedenskirche boasts a pipe organ by Richard Rensch. The acoustics make it a popular concert venue. In 2020, Volker Lutz even wrote a book about the organ. A gospel choir holds monthly concerts.
Look closely at the tower. Notice the blend of old and new. The apostle figures and Christ remain from the original church. They stand as silent witnesses to the past.
