Can you smell the past? We’re standing at the Freilichtmuseum Roscheider Hof. It’s more than just a museum. It is a portal into the rural cultural history of the German-Luxembourg-Lorraine border region.

The Freilichtmuseum Roscheider Hof isn’t your typical museum. It is not owned by the city. A non-profit association has supported it since 1973.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine revolutionary troops conquering the Trier region in 1794. The Roscheider Hof estate was once owned by the St Matthias Benedictine monastery. The French state auctioned it off in 1805. Nicholas Valdenaire bought it. He was a French soldier who married into a local family.

Valdenaire expanded the estate. He enlarged the Roscheider Hof buildings. He played a prominent role in the 1848 revolution. He was a deputy in multiple parliaments. He was even imprisoned for his activities.

The Roscheider Hof has a rich history. Records show it existed as early as 1330. Renovations revealed parts of a building from the early 16th century. Look for the small walled window with late Gothic splays.

Today the Freilichtmuseum Roscheider Hof displays an impressive collection. There are 4000 square meters of folklore exhibitions. These exhibits range from winegrowing to dentistry. Also in the historical exhibition building, there is the museum of forestry and wood.

Outside, 22 hectares of open grounds await. Explore the Hunsrück village. A Moselle village is being reconstructed. Relax in the rose garden or explore country gardens. The museum boasts a restaurant with a beer garden. A large nature-oriented children’s playground offers fun for families.

Don’t miss the activity days and special exhibitions. The Christmas market is legendary. It takes place on two weekends in Advent. Guided tours are available for all ages. Children’s birthday parties can even be arranged.

The Freilichtmuseum Roscheider Hof brings history to life. It preserves the past for future generations. It began in 1976. The goal is to represent the folk culture of the Mosel and Saar region. This includes the Eifel, Hunsrück, Saarland, Luxembourg and Lorraine areas.

The museum showcases rural life. Exhibits show the lives of laborers, farmers and winemakers. Village professions are displayed. See the workshops of craftsmen, dentists and pharmacists. The museum covers the period from 1860 to 1960. Some exhibits are even older.

Explore the wine, Viez and schnapps exhibits. Learn about wine production. See the different types of presses. The oldest wine press dates back to 1641. Discover the tradition of Viez, a cider-like drink. It was typically consumed by less affluent people.

The Freilichtmuseum Roscheider Hof is constantly evolving. It offers something for everyone. From historical buildings to fascinating exhibits, it is a journey through time. Its unique exhibits are a testament to the region’s rich heritage. It’s a place where the past comes alive.
