Picture Freedom High School. A vibrant hub of learning in Loudoun County Virginia. It’s a public high school a mere 25 miles from the bustle of Washington DC. But this isn’t just any school. Freedom High opened its doors in 2005. It inherited students from older established schools like Broad Run High School and Loudoun County High School. Think of the excitement and perhaps some apprehension of those first students. They were pioneers forging a new path for their community.
Freedom’s early years weren’t without their challenges. The school quickly outgrew its original capacity. By 2011-2012 the student population soared past 2000 exceeding the building’s design limit of 1600. Imagine the hallways packed the classrooms bustling. To ease the overcrowding some freshman classes were temporarily held at Mercer Middle School a nearby feeder school. The opening of J Michael Lunsford Middle School eventually helped alleviate this problem. The construction of John Champe High School further eased the pressure. The school expanded significantly before the 2015-2016 school year adding almost 13000 square feet of space.
Freedom High’s success extends far beyond its physical expansion. The school has consistently achieved recognition for academic excellence. It boasts several annual Virginia Index of Performance VIP awards recognizing advanced learning. These awards highlight the dedication of both students and faculty. From 2007 onwards the school was awarded the Governor’s Excellence Award and the Board of Education Excellence Award. The school also achieved the Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award multiple times. This shows a sustained commitment to academic excellence.
But Freedom High’s achievements aren’t limited to academics alone. The school boasts a thriving fine arts program. The marching band and drumline have won numerous accolades at regional and national competitions. The winterguard similarly achieved incredible success. Remember those early years of the school? The school also boasts a diverse student population reflecting the rich tapestry of its surrounding community. In 2016-17 the student body included a diverse mix of ethnicities showcasing the school’s inclusive nature. A strong athletics program adds to Freedom’s vibrant atmosphere. The Eagles compete in various varsity sports. The girls’ basketball and gymnastics teams have earned state championships. The girls’ lacrosse team also claimed several state titles.
