In 1941, a tragic plane crash in Newfoundland claimed the life of a remarkable Canadian hero. Sir Frederick Banting, a name synonymous with the discovery of insulin, was on his way to England. He was contributing to aviation medical research during World War II. Right here in Toronto, we celebrate the legacy of this extraordinary man. Frederick Banting’s impact on the world is undeniable. His discovery revolutionized diabetes treatment.

Frederick Banting was born in Alliston, Ontario in 1891. He initially intended to study divinity at the University of Toronto. However, he soon shifted his focus to medicine. He earned his medical degree in 1916. Banting’s life took a dramatic turn with the outbreak of World War I. He joined the Canadian Army Medical Corps and served in France. In the Battle of Cambrai in 1918, he sustained a significant arm injury. Despite this, he courageously continued treating casualties for 16 hours. This bravery earned him the Military Cross for heroism.

After the war, Frederick Banting returned to Canada. He practiced medicine in London, Ontario and taught at Western University. It was during this time that the seeds of his groundbreaking discovery were sown. Banting conceived the idea of extracting insulin from the pancreas to treat diabetes. He pursued this research at the University of Toronto with J.J.R. Macleod and Charles H. Best. Their collaborative efforts led to a revolutionary treatment for diabetes. This achievement was recognized with the 1923 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. Banting became the youngest recipient of this prestigious award.

Beyond his scientific pursuits, Frederick Banting had a passion for the arts. He was a skilled artist and a member of the Arts & Letters Club. He forged friendships with the Group of Seven artists. He even joined A.Y. Jackson on painting expeditions. Banting’s contributions extended beyond medicine and art. In 1934, he was knighted by King George V, a testament to his remarkable service. His legacy continues to inspire scientists, artists, and humanitarians alike. Frederick Banting’s story is a testament to the power of dedication, resilience, and the pursuit of knowledge.
