Isn’t it amazing how a simple garden can tell such a profound story? Here at the Fred Urquhart Memorial Garden we celebrate a remarkable life. This space commemorates Frederick Albert Urquhart. He was a pioneering zoologist.

Fred Urquhart was born in Toronto in 1911. He dedicated his life to understanding monarch butterflies. Urquhart’s work became world-renowned. He solved the mystery of their migration.

He studied at the University of Toronto. In 1937 he earned his MA. Later, in 1940, he received his Ph.D.

He married Norah Roden Patterson in 1945. She became his research partner. Together, they made incredible discoveries.

The Urquharts developed the Alar Tagging Method in the 1940s. They tracked butterflies by attaching tags to their wings. Hundreds of volunteers joined their efforts. These citizen scientists reported sightings.

For nearly four decades, the Urquharts researched monarch migration. Their work revealed the monarch’s routes. They discovered the migration spans generations.

In 1975, a major breakthrough occurred. Two members of Urquhart’s network found millions of monarchs in Mexico. Ken and Cathy Brugger made this discovery. The butterflies had traveled thousands of kilometers.

Fred and Norah Urquhart journeyed to Mexico in 1976. They witnessed the monarch’s wintering site. The discovery was one of the greatest in natural history.

He published his findings in National Geographic. The 1976 article featured a photo of Cathy Trail covered in butterflies.

He wrote books. “The Monarch Butterfly” was published in 1960. “The Monarch Butterfly: International Traveler” came out in 1987.

He helped to found the Federation of Ontario Naturalists in the 1940s.

Both Fred and Norah Urquhart were appointed Members of the Order of Canada in 1998. He was a fellow of the Royal Entomological Society.

Fred Urquhart died in 2002 in Pickering, Ontario. He was 90 years old.

The Urquhart Butterfly Garden in Dundas, Ontario, also honors them. It was the first municipal butterfly garden in Canada.

The Fred Urquhart Memorial Garden invites reflection. Consider the dedication of Fred and Norah Urquhart. Their work inspires us to protect these delicate creatures. Their legacy lives on in every fluttering wing.
