Was Franz Schubert really born in such a humble dwelling? Here at Franz Schubert’s birthplace, housed in a building once known as “Zum roten Krebs” (“The Red Crab”), we’re standing before a testament to the composer’s modest beginnings. This house, on Nussdorfer Strasse 54, saw the birth of young Franz on January 31st, 1797. Can you imagine, 14 children were born to the Schubert family within these walls? Sadly, only five survived past infancy. Franz, the fourth child, formed an unbreakable bond with his mother Elisabeth, nurtured within this very space. She gave birth to him in their small apartment’s smokehouse. The top floor of Franz Schubert’s birthplace is now a museum, offering a glimpse into his life and his extraordinary musical journey. Here, amongst portraits and mementos, you can even find the composer’s spectacles, a tangible link to the man who gifted the world with such beautiful melodies.
