Built between 1930 and 1939 the Franz-Mair-Hof stands proudly in Vienna. This impressive residential complex originally housed 227 apartments. Later extensions increased that number to 269. Architect Franz Schacherl designed the Franz-Mair-Hof. He was a significant figure in Viennese architecture.

The Franz-Mair-Hof’s name honors Franz Mair. Mair founded the Vienna Schubertbund a renowned choir. He served as its choirmaster from 1879 to 1890. He even conducted the celebratory concerts of the seventh German Singerbundfest in Vienna in 1890. A commemorative plaque at the corner of Laufbergergasse and Schüttelstraße remembers him.

Notice the Franz-Mair-Hof’s understated elegance. Its long facade on Schüttelstraße curves subtly. The building’s design features varied window sizes and axes. This creates a unique visual rhythm. The entrance is monumental. A tall rectangular portal is flanked by two square windows. These windows align with those on upper floors. A canopy supported by two pillars unifies the entrance and adjacent windows. This symmetric design is striking. Lateral balconies add further accents. The stairwells dominate the courtyard facades. They are a defining feature of the Franz-Mair-Hof.

The Franz-Mair-Hof is not just about architecture. It’s a canvas for art. Lydia Rappolt’s sgraffito mural Family with Sheep adorns a front wall. This is above a built-in beer garden. Walter Leitner’s Badger a nature stone sculpture is in the courtyard’s playground. A Hans R Pippal designed pillar stands outside. It features glass mosaics depicting Prater motifs.

The Franz-Mair-Hof underwent significant renovations. From 1988 to 1990 elevators were added. A comprehensive refurbishment occurred from 2011 to 2017. This included roof replacement window and door renewal and the addition of a thermal insulation composite system. This lowered heating costs and reduced the carbon footprint. Stairwells hallways and washrooms were also restored. The Franz-Mair-Hof is a testament to Viennese architectural and artistic heritage. It seamlessly blends functionality and aesthetics. It stands as a symbol of community and social housing.
