Francysk Skaryna, the man immortalized in bronze, was a true Renaissance man. Born in Polotsk, Belarus, in 1470, he wasn’t confined by geographical boundaries or intellectual limits. He journeyed to Krakow, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1506, and later, a doctorate in medicine from the University of Padua in 1512. But Skaryna’s true passion lay in the power of the written word. He believed in knowledge for all, not just the elite. In 1517, he established his own printing press in Prague, a city teeming with intellectual and artistic fervor. Here, he embarked on his most ambitious project – translating and printing the Bible in the language of his people.
