What stories could this unassuming stele tell? We stand before the Francesco Petrarca Stele, a monument that whispers tales of a famed poet and his Venetian escapade. In the heart of Venice, this stele marks the site where a grand palazzo once graced the Riva degli Schiavoni. It was here, in Palazzo Molin, that the great Francesco Petrarca, renowned for his sonnets and humanist ideals, found sanctuary. Imagine, if you will, the year 1362. Petrarca, weary of life in Padua, seeks refuge in the vibrant city of canals. He strikes a deal with the Venetian Republic: his vast library in exchange for a home. Venice, always supportive of the arts, readily agreed. They offered him Palazzo Molin, a magnificent dwelling overlooking the bustling harbor. Petrarca, captivated by the city’s beauty, penned numerous works inspired by the sights and sounds of Venice. He wrote about the grand ships, their masts towering above the rooftops, arriving from distant lands like Tana, laden with treasures and spices. He described the dramatic sirocco winds, the bustling shipyards, and the ever-present ebb and flow of the tides. But alas, Petrarca’s Venetian idyll was not to last. Disputes with Venetian critics wounded his pride, and in 1367, he bid farewell to the city, leaving behind not only his beloved palazzo but also, sadly, much of his promised library. Today, the Francesco Petrarca Stele stands as a quiet sentinel, a testament to the fleeting presence of a literary giant who once called Venice home. It is a reminder that even the grandest palaces eventually crumble, leaving behind only stories etched in stone and whispers in the wind.
