Shimmering granite under the sun. That’s Fragments of Sky. Five blocks of Blues in the Night granite stand before you. Each block holds a piece of the cosmos. Artist Larry Kirkland created this masterpiece. He was inspired by historic celestial maps. Royal Astronomer John Flamsteed’s work provided the inspiration. Flamsteed’s 3000-star catalog from the early 1700s is famous. Images from these maps were carefully engraved. The granite’s lively shimmer enhances the celestial engravings. Fragments of Sky isn’t just about the stars. It complements Kirkland’s Wonder Wander installation. Wonder Wander features eyes looking up. Kirkland said people have always wondered about the stars. We want to understand our place in the universe. Fragments of Sky connects us to the heavens. Benches nearby connect us to earth. Elements of land and sea are engraved into them. This artwork encourages contemplation. It’s a reminder of our place in the universe. It’s a beautiful blend of art and astronomy. Fragments of Sky stands as a testament to human curiosity. It inspires us to look up and wonder. This public art installation shows the power of art. It blends art science and history. It leaves a lasting impression on all who see it. The shimmering granite blocks continue to capture the imagination. Fragments of Sky is more than just a sculpture. It is an experience.
