In the 1980s, the Canadian Opera Company needed a new home. For 40 years, they had been housed at the O’Keefe Centre. A new space was needed for their growing ambitions.
Initially, a Bay Street location was proposed. A design competition was even won. But the project faced financial hurdles.
The government withdrew funding in 1992. The Bay Street project was cancelled. Two towers now stand where the opera house was meant to be.
In 1997, a parking lot at Queen and University became the new site. But this project, too, faced challenges.
Finally, in 2002, the Canadian Opera Company launched a new design invitation. The Four Seasons hotel chain donated CA$20 million for naming rights. Diamond Schmitt Architects won with their modernist design.
Construction began in 2003 and concluded in 2006. The Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts opened on June 14, 2006. The opening performance was Wagner’s “Der Ring des Nibelungen.”
Inside, the R. Fraser Elliott Hall is modeled after European opera houses. It features a five-tiered, horseshoe-shaped auditorium. This design brings the audience closer to the stage.
Acoustics were a priority. The walls diffuse sound throughout the hall. The theatre sits on rubber pads to block outside noise. This ensures a pristine listening experience.
The exterior blends glass and brick. The City Room’s glass walls face University Avenue. The east side features plain brick.
The Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre is in the City Room. It hosts free concerts. This makes the arts accessible to everyone.
The Four Seasons Centre has hosted many notable performances. These include Canadian premieres and new works.
Musicals have also graced the stage. “Miss Saigon” and “South Pacific” were among them.
