What if I told you the air around Fortunato Foti Park crackles with the echoes of exploding artistry? This park bears the name of a family whose passion ignited the skies above Sydney. Fortunato Foti Park is more than just green space. It’s a tribute to a legacy of light and sound.

The Foti family’s story began in Italy in 1793. They have been creating fireworks for over eight generations. In the 1950s, the family brought their fiery tradition to Australia. Celestino Foti, the patriarch, arrived after being a prisoner of war. He restarted the family business here.

Celestino first worked at the Vulcan fireworks factory in Menangle Park. His sons Sam and Vince joined him later. Even while at Vulcan, Celestino kept the Foti tradition alive. He made fireworks for Sydney’s Italian community celebrations. These celebrations also included local Agricultural Show Societies.

In 1969, Celestino and Sam bought Vulcan Fireworks. They renamed it International Fireworks. The Foti’s then shifted from selling fireworks to creating pyrotechnic displays. In 1983, Fortunato Foti joined the family business full-time. Three generations of Fotis were now working together. They continued their family’s explosive art.

Almost every firework display in the Macarthur region was once made by the Foti family. John Leary, from the Fisher’s Ghost Festivals, recalled Celestino’s dedication. He quietly checked every firework for safety before each show. Celestino would assure him, “John, don’t worry it will be a good display.” And it always was.

In 1987, the manufacturing facility moved to Leppington. The business continued to flourish. Foti International Fireworks gained international recognition. They co-presented the 1997 Sydney New Year’s Eve fireworks. Then they won the contract for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games ceremonies.

Since 1997, Foti International has designed Sydney’s New Year’s Eve fireworks. Their displays are viewed by over a billion people worldwide. Fortunato Foti himself directs these mesmerizing shows. He draws on centuries of family expertise.

The Foti family’s secret is passion. It is passed down through generations. As Giovanni Foti said, “We start to love them then we start to try and make other people love them.”

Fortunato Foti describes fireworks as “flowers in the sky.” From Italy to Sydney, the Foti family’s dedication has transformed celebrations into unforgettable spectacles. As you stand here in Fortunato Foti Park remember the family who paints the sky with fire. Their passion continues to light up our world.
