Upon this rocky outcrop stands Skärholmens fornborg. A silent sentinel overlooking Mälaren. Its history whispers of a time long past. A time of migrations and Viking raids.

Skärholmens fornborg is a fortified settlement. It dates back to the Migration Period and the Viking Age. Its location was strategically chosen. A 45-meter-high hilltop near ancient waterways. This provided excellent defense. The steep slopes towards Mälaren offered natural protection. The landward side was less steep. Here a wall was built its remnants still visible today.

Large stone blocks form the wall. They are stacked carefully on top of each other. A 100-meter long section remains on the eastern side. A clear entrance breaks the wall’s continuity. Shorter stretches of the wall exist to the north and west. Each section is approximately 15 meters long. A wooden palisade likely further strengthened the defenses. The plateau itself is quite large. It measures approximately 200 meters long and 100 meters wide.

Skärholmens fornborg played a vital role. It may have been part of a chain of signaling hills. These hills extended from Mälaren’s entrance to Birka. They served as an early warning system. This warned against approaching enemy fleets. Other nearby signal hills are known. Vikingaberget and Korpberget are two examples. Imagine the smoke signals soaring across the landscape. A vital communication network in a time before instant messaging.

Skärholmens fornborg is more than just stones and earth. It represents resilience. It represents a community’s dedication to safeguarding its home. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity and adaptability. It is a window into the past. A tangible link to those who lived and defended this very spot centuries ago. So let us pause here. Let us reflect on the lives lived within these ancient walls. A silent tribute to a bygone era.
