A weathered plaque marks the spot. This is the former site of the Mortdale Masonic Temple. Can you picture the impressive building that once stood here? Built in 1922 it served as Woronora Lodge. It was a significant landmark a place of community and ritual.

The Mortdale Masonic Temple wasn’t just bricks and mortar. It housed generations of memories. The School of Arts Dramatic Society performed there. The Mortdale Phsie physical culture club thrived within its walls until 1985. Generations of Masons met within these walls to celebrate their fraternity. Their rituals their traditions their bonds were forged here.

But the temple’s story isn’t just about its glorious past. It’s also a story of change. A story of progress that clashed with preservation. In December 2010 the Mortdale Masonic Temple was demolished. The National Trust and local residents protested. They fought to preserve this heritage building. Their pleas however fell on deaf ears. The local council decided the building had no heritage value. A new 41-space car park now sits where the temple once stood. This was meant to ease the parking shortage in the area. It provides easy access to the train station shops and services.

The new car park serves a practical purpose. It is certainly a convenience. However its creation remains a bittersweet memory for many. Some mourn the loss of the temple. They remember the lively performances. They cherish its historical significance. They feel the loss of a place that held so much meaning for the Mortdale community.

Today this plaque remains. A silent witness to a community’s transformation. It stands as a tribute to what was and a reminder of what is. It represents a complex history. A history of community gathering and eventual change. The former site of the Mortdale Masonic Temple. A place where history and progress intersect.
