“Emergency services in Penrith? They weren’t always housed here.” This is the Former Penrith Ambulance Station. Before this building existed, the ambulance resided at 229 High Street. It sat right on the corner of Doonmore Street.

Now, standing before the Former Penrith Ambulance Station, imagine a Penrith without this vital service readily available. The Nepean and Hawkesbury Ambulance Committee knew they needed a better solution. Their district covered the entire Nepean-Hawkesbury Valley. A man named F. C. Jones stepped forward. Jones generously donated this land. He also donated land for the Nepean Hospital.

The Former Penrith Ambulance Station officially opened on November 28th, 1936. The Minister for Health presided over the ceremony. The building was designed by T.W. Hodgson and built by E.T. Olsen.

Consider the layout of the Former Penrith Ambulance Station. The ground floor held an ambulance garage. A first aid room stood ready. Staff enjoyed their own room, plus there was a living room. The board convened in their own dedicated room. A kitchen completed the ground floor. Upstairs, four bedrooms provided accommodation. Another living room offered space to relax. A balcony offered fresh air. Out back, more garages and a laundry served practical needs.

Note the architecture of the Former Penrith Ambulance Station. It showcases decorative features typical of the 1930s. These details offer a glimpse into the past.

Imagine the bustling activity within these walls. Ambulances stood ready to respond. Staff members prepared for emergencies. This station served the community for many years. The Nepean-Hawkesbury District operated from here. Later, the Central District took over. They continued to use this building. That was until a new ambulance station opened.

Think about the lives saved and the comfort provided within the Former Penrith Ambulance Station’s walls. This building represents a crucial chapter in Penrith’s history. It stands as a reminder of community support.

Today, the Former Penrith Ambulance Station serves a different purpose. It now houses a real estate agent’s office. The building stands on the corner of High Street and Doonmore Street.

The Former Penrith Ambulance Station is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of Penrith’s growth and evolution. It reminds us of the dedication of those who serve. It also reminds us of the generosity of those who give. Take a moment to appreciate the history held within these walls.
