A curious water fountain. It’s for dogs not people. Welcome to Ford Park.

Ford Park sits beside the Cooks River in Strathfield South. It’s more than just a pretty place. It’s a tribute to Ebenezer Ford. He was Enfield’s mayor for many years. He championed the concreting of the Cooks River. A popular idea at the time.

The park’s land was acquired in stages starting in 1931. This was when the river was straightened and paved. More land came in 1933 and 1935. The NSW government helped with loans. In 1949 Ford Park came under Strathfield Council’s control.

Ebenezer Ford was a builder. He developed much of the Broadway shopping centre. He served on the Enfield Council for over two decades. His obituary boasts he never missed a meeting. Until his final illness. He was also president of the Western Suburbs Hospital and a Burwood District Friendly Societies Dispensary. His legacy lives on in Ford Park’s name.

The park also features the Jessie Broomfield Memorial Water Fountain. A special fountain for thirsty dogs. Jessie Broomfield’s will provided for dog fountains in Sydney. Her wishes led to this unique feature in Ford Park. The fountain was finished in 1948.

Ford Park’s landscaping was planned in the 1970s. It involved planting native plants. The vegetation forms a vital habitat corridor. Connecting with other Cooks River parks.

Today Ford Park is a lively place. It’s popular for groups events and family fun. The Bay to Bay Cycle and Walkway runs through it. It connects Botany Bay and Homebush Bay. The park offers a peaceful escape. A quiet moment by the Cooks River. All this thanks to the vision of Ebenezer Ford and the kindness of Jessie Broomfield.
