Amidst the sprawling beauty of Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden sits a curious structure, the Folly for Mrs Macquarie. This isn’t your typical garden ornament. It’s a thought-provoking installation by artist Fiona Hall, erected in 2000. The Folly for Mrs Macquarie stands as a modern interpretation of historical follies, those whimsical structures designed more for artistic expression than practicality. It overlooks Farm Cove and Sydney Harbour, much like a similar structure enjoyed by Mrs. Macquarie herself over two centuries ago. Elizabeth Macquarie, wife of Governor Lachlan Macquarie, played a significant role in the development of these very gardens from 1816 onwards. Hall’s creation incorporates wrought iron and sandstone, materials that echo the era of early colonial settlement. The Folly for Mrs Macquarie isn’t just visually striking. It tells a story. Look closely, and you’ll notice a raised arm clutching a dagger. This is taken directly from the Macquarie family crest. Above, a domed roof of Norfolk Island pine fronds provides a deceptive sense of tranquility. The true nature of the folly is revealed beneath. A ceiling of animal bones serves as a stark reminder of the native species displaced by the colony’s expansion. Barbed wire forms the “windows,” symbolizing the division of the land and the impact of colonization. The Folly for Mrs Macquarie invites contemplation. It asks us to consider the complex layers of history, the triumphs and follies, that have shaped this beautiful land. As you sit in the sunken seating area, take a moment to absorb the view, and reflect on the stories whispered by this unique artwork.
