Ever seen a full-sized replica of Stonehenge made entirely of Styrofoam? Welcome to Foamhenge, a quirky yet magnificent attraction right here in Centreville, Virginia. This isn’t your typical ancient monument. Foamhenge was created in 2004 by fiberglass sculptor Mark Cline. Cline considered it his greatest achievement. He originally built it as an April Fool’s Day prank. But its popularity quickly transformed it into a beloved roadside attraction. Foamhenge originally stood in Natural Bridge, Virginia. In 2017, it found a new home at Cox Farms. The move wasn’t just a simple relocation. It involved astronomical precision. Cox Farms’ owner, Lucas Cox, wanted to ensure the replica aligned with the solstices, just like the original Stonehenge. He consulted with Harold Geller, an observatory director at George Mason University. Together, they observed the summer solstice at Cox Farms. They carefully marked the placement for each Styrofoam block. The result? A Foamhenge that not only replicates the appearance of Stonehenge. It also mirrors its astronomical orientation. Some even say that Foamhenge, nestled amidst the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is more photogenic than the original. The bright white Styrofoam blocks contrast beautifully with the surrounding landscape. This creates a unique and memorable visual experience. So, next time you’re craving a touch of ancient history with a modern twist, visit Foamhenge. You’ll find it at Cox Farms, where quirky meets magnificent. Remember to check their website for seasonal availability and opening hours.
