Centuries ago, the Flour Mill was a bustling hub of activity. Imagine farmers from all over the region converging on this spot, their carts laden with sacks of wheat. They would spend hours, even days, at the Flour Mill, waiting their turn to grind their grain. The Flour Mill, also known as “Seven Mills” (Jarisha), is one of five mills that once operated along the Yarkon River. Its name derives from the seven millstones housed in the largest of its three buildings. The Flour Mill complex was built upon the foundations of even older mills, incorporating an ancient arched bridge into its structure. You can still see the remnants of these arches today. The mill operated for centuries, dating back to the Ottoman era. The village of Jarisha, meaning “grinding,” grew up around the mill and a large pond. A stone weir was constructed to create the water pressure needed to power the eleven millstones. Each millstone had the capacity to grind approximately 50 kg of grain per hour. The Flour Mill wasn’t just an agricultural center. It was a social and cultural hub as well. People came here to enjoy boat rides on the pond, to trade, and to socialize at the local coffeehouse. The workers of the mill were the residents of Jarisha, a village that has sadly disappeared, leaving no trace behind. In the 1920s, the Flour Mill was purchased, but it struggled to compete with newer mills. By 1936, it had closed its doors for good. Today, only the ruins remain, giving us a glimpse into a bygone era. The Flour Mill stands as a testament to the region’s rich agricultural history. It’s a reminder of a time when life moved at a slower pace and people were connected to the land in a way that’s hard to imagine today.
