A beleaguered King Erik XIV marched his troops across this very point, the floating bridge groaning under their weight, on his way to confront his rebellious brothers. The clash that followed, near Botkyrka kyrka, saw Erik’s cavalry push back the initial assault. Years later, in the somber summer of 1634, a grand funeral procession wound its way past Flottsbro. The remains of Gustav II Adolf, fallen in battle, were being transported from Nyköping’s castle to their final resting place in Riddarholmskyrkan. Even the exiled Queen Kristina, in the autumn of 1654, journeyed past Flottsbro on her first leg to Rome, before seeking refuge at nearby “Alby Krog” for the night. In the 1860s, three humble cottages dotted the landscape: Nedre Flottsbro, Storkenstorp (also known as Backen or Övre Flottsbro), and Rönneboda. Only Rönneboda remains, now a simple lodging for travelers within the Flottsbro complex. The very ground beneath your feet, once trod by kings and queens, now welcomes skiers carving down Stockholm’s highest and longest slope, Flottsbrobacken. With a 103-meter drop and a 700-meter run, this modern marvel stands in stark contrast to its predecessor, “Ullerstupet,” a simple slalom slope with a tow lift and ski lodge that graced these slopes in the 1960s.
