On a tragic day in 1945, the Fliegergedenkstein Hans-Ernst Meyer Stele became a silent witness to a young pilot’s ill-fated flight. Imagine standing here in the serene Stadtwald of Stralsund, the air thick with the scent of pine needles. It was here, on March 13th, that 19-year-old Oberfähnrich Hans-Ernst Meyer crashed during a training exercise. The Fliegergedenkstein Hans-Ernst Meyer Stele, a poignant stone memorial, marks this somber spot. The impact of the crash left the ground a muddy mess, hindering any immediate rescue or recovery efforts. A burial mound was erected as a final resting place for the young pilot, a testament to the tragedy that unfolded. For years, the grave was meticulously cared for, a beacon of remembrance amidst the woodland. However, time, as it so often does, began to obscure the memory. By 1991, the Fliegergedenkstein Hans-Ernst Meyer Stele lay forgotten, the grave overgrown, its story lost to the passage of time. But fate, it seemed, had other plans. That year, driven by grief and a longing for connection, Hans-Ernst Meyer’s brother reached out. He sought the help of Hartmut Olejnik, the director of the Stralsund Zoo, to rediscover this lost grave. Through their efforts, the Fliegergedenkstein Hans-Ernst Meyer Stele was found, its story once again brought to light. The grave was painstakingly restored, a new memorial erected. The Fliegergedenkstein Hans-Ernst Meyer Stele stands as a solemn reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring power of memory, even in the quiet embrace of the Stadtwald. It is a testament to the bravery of a young pilot and the enduring love of a brother.
