Founded in 1845 the First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto is a significant part of Toronto’s history. It’s one of the oldest Unitarian congregations in Canada. This congregation played a crucial role in shaping the city’s social landscape. Imagine the bustling streets of 19th-century Toronto. The original congregation met on George Street before moving to Jarvis Street in 1854.

The First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a community hub. It nurtured many prominent individuals. Joseph Workman a founding member is known as the “Father of Canadian Psychiatry”. The congregation also counted Arthur Lismer of the Group of Seven among its members. Think of the artistic energy in the air as he sat among fellow congregants. Other notable members included Sir Francis Hincks a politician Emily Stowe Canada’s first female doctor William Dennison a mayor of Toronto and Michael Cassidy a leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party. These individuals represent the diverse and influential community fostered within the congregation’s walls.

The congregation’s current building underwent extensive renovations in 1993. The main space Sunderland Hall was reoriented. Workman Hall a former disused stage was transformed. New offices and classrooms were added. A stunning stained glass window Radiance Reflection Revelation by artist Sarah Hall was commissioned. This stunning piece was even nominated for a prestigious award. This demonstrates the congregation’s commitment to both its spiritual and artistic growth.

In 2007 the city’s heritage preservation committee proposed designating the building a heritage property. The church’s board deferred the designation to allow members to discuss it. This highlights the congregation’s commitment to preserving its history and legacy within the community.

Today the First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto continues to thrive. It’s a vibrant center for spiritual growth and community engagement. While its building is currently under renovation the spirit of this congregation persists. It’s a testament to the enduring power of community and faith.
