Toronto’s Jewish heart beats strongly within these walls. This is the First Narayever Congregation. It is a beacon of tradition and egalitarianism. Founded in 1914 by Jewish immigrants from Narayiv Ukraine the First Narayever Congregation has a rich history.

Imagine these streets filled with newcomers seeking community. They formed a landsmanshaft. It was an association for those from the same town. In this case it was Naraiev. The First Narayever Congregation initially met in a rented building. It was at the corner of Huron and Dundas. These humble beginnings paved the way for a lasting legacy.

In 1943 the First Narayever Congregation acquired its current home on Brunswick Avenue. This building had a unique past. It was once Bethel Church and originally a Foresters’ Lodge. The First Narayever Congregation became a cornerstone of Jewish life in downtown Toronto. It stood alongside Shaarei Tzedec as one of the last remaining shtiebels. These were small congregations in the vibrant Jewish area around Kensington Market.

Post World War II brought changes. Many congregants moved north along Bathurst Street. Yet some remained loyal traveling downtown to the First Narayever Congregation. Others joined when their synagogues moved uptown. The 1970s and 1980s ushered in a new era. Younger professionals and liberal members joined the First Narayever Congregation. In 1983 the synagogue embraced egalitarianism. An alternative service was introduced downstairs. The Orthodox service continued upstairs for a time. Eventually the egalitarian service moved upstairs. This attracted new members. The First Narayever Congregation evolved. Today it remains unaffiliated with any larger Jewish religious movement.

The First Narayever Congregation embraces traditional halakha. However it makes no distinction based on gender. The Lev Shalem siddur guides the liturgy. In 2009 the congregation endorsed same-sex marriage celebration. Rabbi Ed Elkin has been the congregation’s rabbi since 2000.

The First Narayever Congregation is more than just a building. It is a community. It welcomes Jews from all walks of life. The First Narayever Congregation fosters acceptance and pluralism. It sustains Jewish values and offers dynamic programming. The First Narayever Congregation is committed to social action. It supports the downtown Toronto Jewish community. The First Narayever Congregation encourages a thoughtful connection to Israel.

The First Narayever Congregation stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Jewish tradition. It embraces change and welcomes all. Its doors are open to everyone seeking a warm inclusive community.
