Pause for a moment here in front of the First Baptist Church. This isn’t just another church. It is a landmark with a story etched in its very foundation.
The First Baptist Church of Tampa began its journey back in 1859. Tampa was then a small community. It only had about 500 to 600 residents. Can you imagine? Sixteen charter members came together to form this church. Their first service was a momentous occasion. It was held on July 23, 1859.
Originally, the church was located in downtown Tampa. As the city expanded, so did the church’s vision. The Lafayette Street Bridge now known as Kennedy Boulevard played a role. Church members began settling in Hyde Park. So, in 1896, the congregation moved. It went to the west side of the river. This was at the intersection of Lafayette Street and Hyde Park Avenue.
With this move to Hyde Park, something remarkable happened. First Baptist Church experienced a period of unprecedented growth. A new sanctuary was needed. Construction began on the building we see today. This Classical Revival style building was dedicated in 1924. Imagine the celebrations.
Just a few years later in 1927, the church expanded even further. A new building was erected. It housed their Sunday school. This cost $115,000. That was a significant sum in those days.
Over the years, First Baptist Church has continued to evolve. Subsequent generations have added to the campus. They built the Culbreath Chapel and Tampa Baptist Manor. Also, they added the Worship Center. These additions show the church’s commitment to serving its growing community.
The present sanctuary building was built in two stages. The sanctuary building was completed in 1925. The attached educational building was finished in 1928.
Throughout its history, First Baptist Church has had many leaders. There have been 21 pastors. Many interim ministers and staff members have served here. Each has contributed to the church’s vibrant story.
Today, First Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith. It is a beacon of hope in the heart of Tampa. It celebrated its 150th anniversary on July 23, 2009. It continues to offer various ministries. These include child, young adult, and adult programs. It is located across from the University of Tampa. Its doors are open to all. The church continues its worship services and outreach today.
Take a moment to appreciate the architecture. Admire the dedication of those who built and sustained this church. The First Baptist Church of Tampa is more than just a building. It is a living legacy. It is a story of faith, growth, and community. A story that continues to unfold.
