How did First Baptist Church in Toronto start? It began with a group of brave souls seeking freedom. These weren’t just any individuals. They were formerly enslaved people. They escaped to Canada via the Underground Railroad.

First Baptist Church is more than just a church. It stands as the oldest Black institution in Toronto. Elder Washington Christian led twelve fugitives. They formed a small Baptist congregation in 1826.

Imagine their plight. Existing “white” churches demanded the impossible. They wanted letters of dismissal from their old churches. They also expected repayment to former enslavers. This was for the “loss of money” due to their escape.

Undeterred, the group organized themselves. They found strength in religious faith. They believed in a Promised Land of physical freedom.

Initially, First Baptist Church services took place in homes. Sometimes they were held outdoors. In 1827, the group leased St. George’s Masonic Lodge. This provided a more stable place for weekly services.

A significant moment arrived in 1834. Britain’s Emancipation Act came into effect. Around 800,000 enslaved Africans gained legal freedom.

The church moved that same year. Services shifted to a schoolhouse on Richmond Street. First Baptist Church moved several times. Finally, it settled at its current location in 1955. This is at the intersection of D’Arcy and Huron streets.

Today, First Baptist Church stands tall. It embraces a diverse congregation. Rev. Wendell Gibbs leads as Toronto Police Chaplain. He is also a community advocate. The church extends its welcome to all. It invites “all races and nationalities to worship”.

First Baptist Church actively remembers its roots. Every February, they acknowledge Black History Month. They host special activities. These include displays, guest speakers, and youth performances.

A heritage room is open to visitors. It showcases historical accounts. Photos and artifacts tell the story of First Baptist Church. A film is planned. It will document the church’s progress through “racial tension”. An additional multimedia project titled Lights, Camera, Action: Bringing Black History to Life is underway. It aims to inspire and inform.

First Baptist Church has a rich history. It began with 12 brave individuals. They sought freedom and a place to worship. Their legacy lives on. The church remains a welcoming beacon for all. It stands as a testament to resilience and faith. It is a place where everyone can belong.
