How many churches do you think Vienna holds? More than you can count perhaps. But today we stand before a special one the Filialkirche Hasenleiten. This isn’t just any church. It’s a story etched in stone and wood a testament to resilience faith and an unexpected Polish gift.

The Filialkirche Hasenleiten in Vienna’s 11th district of Simmering isn’t just a pretty building. It’s a living history book. It stands where a military hospital once did. During World War I a barracks hospital needed a church. A Polish company donated a prefabricated wooden church. This wasn’t your usual church construction. It arrived in pieces like a giant puzzle. They assembled it in the style of a Russian village church. Imagine a slender wooden tower reaching for the sky. Military curate Karl Rudolf blessed it in 1915.

The war ended. The hospital became a homeless shelter. The little wooden church was abandoned and fell into disrepair. But the story doesn’t end there. In 1926 Jesuit Father Peter Paul Pohl and others revived the church. Services resumed. Jesuit Fathers managed the church until 1934. Then Konrad Thurnher became the permanent pastor. He played a crucial role in the church’s next chapter.

Under Thurnher the Hasenleiten area became its own parish in 1944. But the old wooden church was nearing the end of its life. On December 19 1959 Karl Rudolf now a prelate at St Stephen’s Cathedral celebrated the last mass in the old barracks church. It was then demolished.

But the spirit of the church lived on. A new plot of land had been secured. Thurnher’s successors Josef Erber and Anton Haselhofer built the Filialkirche Hasenleiten we see today. Architect Ladislaus Hruska designed this beautiful structure. Archbishop Cardinal Franz König consecrated it on December 20 1959. It became the first and only church in Austria dedicated to St John Maria Vianney the parish priest of Ars.

So next time you visit Vienna remember the Filialkirche Hasenleiten. It’s a church with a resilient past. It stands as a testament to faith perseverance and the enduring power of community. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a story waiting to be discovered. A story of a Polish gift a world war a resilient community and a church reborn.
