Beneath the sprawling branches of the Figueira das Lágrimas, a story unfolds. This isn’t just any tree. It’s a living monument, the oldest tree in São Paulo. It has witnessed over 200 years of history, its roots intertwining with the city’s very soul. The Figueira das Lágrimas stands on Estrada das Lágrimas, a name as poignant as the tree itself. Once, this very spot marked the edge of the city, the start of the old dirt road, the Caminho do Mar, leading to the coast. Here, families bid tearful farewells to loved ones embarking on long journeys, often by ship, to other states or even abroad. These heart-wrenching partings imbued the place with a palpable sense of sorrow, giving rise to the name “Road of Tears,” Estrada das Lágrimas. The tree itself became a silent witness to these poignant moments, its shade offering a final embrace before departure. The Figueira das Lágrimas has seen it all. From the era of horse-drawn carriages and expeditions to the Paraguayan War, to the advent of the railway and the bustling metropolis of today. It even stood here in 1822, a silent observer as Dom Pedro I passed by on his way to declare Brazil’s independence. This magnificent tree has faced its share of adversity. In 1909, the landowner attempted to cut it down. Public outcry, fueled by the newspaper O Estado de S.Paulo, saved the Figueira das Lágrimas. The land was donated to the city, and in 1920, Mayor Firmiano Pinto erected a protective wall. He also placed a bronze plaque bearing a poem by Eugênio Egas, a tribute to the tree’s enduring presence. The Figueira das Lágrimas has been celebrated in art and literature. Painter Oscar Pereira da Silva immortalized it in his 1936 painting, “A Árvore das Lágrimas,” winning the Historical Prize from the City of São Paulo. In 1952, the Brazilian Geographical Society honored it with a plaque affixed to its trunk. Even today, the Figueira das Lágrimas stands as a symbol of resilience and a testament to São Paulo’s rich history. Come, stand beneath its branches, and feel the weight of time, the echoes of laughter and tears, the silent stories whispered by the leaves of the Figueira das Lágrimas.
