Beneath the shade of a young Moreton Bay fig tree stands Morton Bay Figtree Park. This small park in Figtree holds a rich history. It’s more than just a green space. It’s a sacred site a birthing place for generations of Dharawal people.

For centuries before European settlement this giant fig tree was a landmark. It stood tall and proud at the banks of American Creek. Mothers brought their newborns here. They washed them in the creek’s clear water. The gentle sounds of lullabies echoed through the leaves. This ancient tree witnessed countless births. It was a place of reverence and healing.

The tree’s importance wasn’t lost on colonial visitors. They used it as a navigational point. Travelers were directed to turn left or right at the giant fig tree. Its massive size was a wonder to behold. It stood as a lone survivor of a vast rainforest.

Sadly the tree eventually succumbed to disease. Floods fires and roadworks took their toll. It was eventually cut down in the late 1980s. Only a 15-meter-high stump remained. But the spirit of the tree lived on.

A rejuvenation project was launched. A new tree a cutting from the original was planted in 1997. A beautiful mosaic was created to commemorate the original tree. It shows the circumference of the old giant. The mosaic depicts the Yaroma story a significant part of Dharawal culture.

Today Morton Bay Figtree Park is a tranquil spot. It’s a testament to the resilience of the Dharawal people and their connection to the land. It’s a place where you can feel the weight of history. You can imagine the sounds of lullabies and the whispers of ancient stories. Take a moment to appreciate this special place. It’s a living link to the past and a symbol of hope for the future. Remember to respect this sacred site.
