Winds of change and whispers of the earth await you here at Fessura del Vento ingresso 1. This natural cave entrance beckons us to explore a world hidden beneath the surface. It is a place where the elements have carved a unique landscape over millennia.

Fessura del Vento is not just any cave. It is a testament to the power of nature. The cave is located in San Dorligo della Valle near Trieste. The cave entrance stands at an elevation of 295 meters. This first entrance is easily accessible, though a gate limits entry. You will need to request keys to enter this amazing place.

Let’s step back in time to June 2 1964. This marks a pivotal moment. This is when explorers opened what was then the most beautiful and longest cave in the Trieste Karst. Fessura del Vento became renowned. It was the only cave besides the Abyss of Trebiciano with an internal river. Franco Florit is remembered as the talented discoverer. He also found the second deep pit of the Samatorza Abyss.

Initially a part of the Gruppo Speleologico Triestino GST, Florit and others transitioned to the Sezione Geo-Speleologica. This was within the Società Adriatica di Scienze SAS under President Walter Maucci. The Fessura del Vento was entirely shaped by an underground river. This river runs alongside Val Rosandra. The river carved a path on the right flank beneath San Lorenzo. The cave stretches over 2.6 km across two levels. The lower level features a river. Parts of it can even be navigated by canoe.

Before its grand opening, the cave was known for a mere five meters. A strong wind blew from its opening. This could not be justified by its short length. The excavation was lengthy. The initial narrow passage extended at least 50 meters. Explorers squeezed through. They sometimes needed ropes and help from above to ascend.

The cave has a rich history of exploration. The first survey of Fessura del Vento was conducted between 1964 and 1965. Rino Semeraro designed it. A tracing test in 2004 shed light on the cave’s hydrogeology. Uranine was injected into the Rio del lago azzurro. This is a stream within Fessura del Vento. The study traced the water’s path to Fonte Oppia. This showed a direct connection between the cave’s underground stream and the spring.

Imagine yourself as one of those early explorers. Feel the cool wind. Squeeze through narrow passages. Hear the echo of the underground river. Fessura del Vento offers a glimpse into a hidden world. It reveals the forces that have shaped this unique corner of the Karst region. This area has both geological and biological value. It has earned the designation Riserva Naturale della Val Rosandra. The natural reserve was established in 1996. It also became a Site of Community Importance and Special Protection Zone.

Today Fessura del Vento continues to intrigue and inspire. It stands as a reminder of the hidden wonders that lie beneath our feet. Its story is etched in the stone. Fessura del Vento whispers tales of exploration, geological processes, and the enduring power of nature.
