In 1936, Brazil, a land soon to be hailed as the “Heart of the World, Homeland of the Gospel,” pulsed with spiritual energy. Numerous Spiritist Centers dotted the landscape, but in São Paulo, they operated in isolation. A vision emerged, a whisper from the spiritual realm urging unity. This vision ignited the formation of the Federação Espírita do Estado de São Paulo, or FEESP, right here where we stand. The FEESP’s story began with a message received during a gathering of Spiritist pioneers. It spoke of finding “deslumbramentos,” moments of awe, within human life. It called for active charity, not merely theoretical, urging visits to hospitals, prisons, and orphanages. The message emphasized comforting the suffering and offering hope to the desolate. Inspired by this message, the first meeting to discuss the unification of Spiritists in São Paulo took place on May 17, 1936. Seventy-nine individuals gathered at the headquarters of the “São Pedro e São Paulo,” “Celestino dos Santos,” and “Nova Revelação” Spiritist Centers on Rua Barão de Paranapiacaba. The initial goal was simple: to unite those who followed the teachings of Jesus Christ through the lens of Spiritism. The founders of the FEESP envisioned a future where their combined resources could support those in need. They planned to establish nurseries, vocational workshops, and schools focused on moral and spiritual education. They dreamed of providing care for the elderly and a hospital for the obsessed. After several meetings, a new society, the “Congregação Espírita de São Paulo,” was formed. On July 12, 1936, the name was officially changed to Federação Espírita do Estado de São Paulo. This marked the official birth of the FEESP. The FEESP continued to grow, embodying the message of active charity that sparked its creation. Today, the FEESP supports millions directly and indirectly through the dedicated work of its collaborators. They continue the work envisioned by those early pioneers, guided by the spiritual benefactors.
