From a simple clearing in the woods, fd Snösätra torp grew into a bustling farmstead. Imagine this tranquil space teeming with life. Fd Snösätra torp, first mentioned in 1603, was more than just a dwelling. It was a testament to generations of families who called this place home. Originally part of the vast Älvsjö Estate, fd Snösätra torp played a vital role in the area’s agricultural history. In the 1630s, the farm boasted eleven cows, a significant number for the time. It even housed a “husman,” or lodger, who tended to his own small herd of two cows and two sheep. The name Snösätra itself hints at the landscape, likely referring to a meadow or clearing in the woods. Over the years, fd Snösätra torp evolved. In 1753, it split into two separate farmsteads: Lilla (Little) and Stora (Big) Snösätra. Sadly, Stora Snösätra was demolished in 1813, leaving Lilla Snösätra to carry the name forward. In 1938, the farm was leased by Karl Einar Venander and his wife, Ingrid Maria. They oversaw a thriving operation. The land spanned 36 hectares, and the buildings included the main house (built around 1800 and expanded in 1910-1912), an outbuilding from 1890, and a barn and storage from 1918. Their livestock included five horses, a mare, sixteen cows, forty-five young cattle, a bull, two pigs, fifty chickens, and nine ducks. But progress, as it often does, changed the landscape. Fd Snösätra torp eventually met its end. An elderly couple, the last residents, left after the wife passed away. Tragedy struck on September 20, 1970, when a fire ravaged several buildings. The remaining structures were demolished in 1975. Only a cellar remains today, used by the Snösätra Norra Fritidsträdgårdsförening (Northern Allotment Garden Association). While the physical structure is gone, the legacy of fd Snösätra torp lives on. Its name graces nearby streets and the surrounding Snösätra area, a green lung within Rågsved. The land, once cultivated fields, now hosts allotment gardens and a storage area, continuing the cycle of use and adaptation that defines this place.
