Could a neighborhood once home to both palaces and poverty exist? Here in Vienna’s Fasanviertel, that very paradox unfolds. The Fasanviertel, named after a former beer house called “Zum Fasandl,” has a history as diverse as its architecture. Imagine strolling through the streets in the 19th century, where fields and meadows dominated the landscape. By the late 1800s, a building boom transformed the area, giving rise to charming streets like Mohsgasse and Hegergasse. At the heart of it all stood the Laveranhaus.

This hunting lodge, named after its French builder, became a microcosm of Viennese society. By the 1880s, it housed 120 apartments. Among its residents were the family of Leopold Kunschak, a future President of the National Council of Austria, highlighting the area’s social climb. However, the Fasanviertel also held stories of stark contrast. Magdalena Küchler, a resident of the Laveranhaus, committed a gruesome act of desperation. Driven to the brink by poverty, she killed her own son and scattered his remains across Vienna. It’s a chilling reminder of the hardships faced by some during that era.

Today, the Laveranhaus is gone, replaced by new streets and buildings. Yet, echoes of its past remain. The Fasanviertel stands as a testament to Vienna’s ever-evolving story. It’s a place where grand palaces and humble dwellings once co-existed, reflecting the city’s complex social fabric. As you wander through the streets today, let your imagination transport you back. Picture the clatter of horse-drawn carriages, the whispers of scandalous secrets, and the echoes of lives lived on the edge of poverty and privilege. The Fasanviertel, a neighborhood forever intertwined with Vienna’s vibrant past.
