October 18, 1956. A crisp autumn day in Stockholm. Imagine the scene. Crowds gathered at Lingvägen 155 in Hökarängen. They’re here to witness the grand opening of Enskede brandstation, later known as Farsta brandstation. The esteemed architect Gunnar Lené, known for his work on the now-decommissioned Hägerstens brandstation, designed this vital piece of Stockholm’s infrastructure. Farsta brandstation stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to safety and preparedness. Borgarrådet Helge Berglund officially inaugurated Farsta brandstation, marking the beginning of its dedicated service to the community. Originally serving the Enskede district, Farsta brandstation adopted its current name after the formation of the Farsta parish in 1957. The station’s watch district is extensive. It stretches eastward towards the borders of Nacka and Tyresö municipalities. Southward, it extends towards Huddinge municipality, reaching Huddingevägen. The boundary follows a complex path. It runs along Älvkällevägen, via Sockenvägen to Enskedevägen. Then it continues to the border of Nacka municipality, passing through Nytorps gärde. Approximately 170,000 people live within this protected area. Farsta brandstation houses a crucial array of equipment. This includes a fire/rescue vehicle, a turntable ladder, a hooklift truck, and an AI vehicle (AI standing for “avancerad indikering” or advanced detection). The station also commands a MIRG (Maritime Incident Response Group) unit. This specialized team performs sea rescues and extinguishes fires at sea, often utilizing helicopters for deployment. In 2009, a dedicated team staffed Farsta brandstation. This comprised a fire chief, a fire foreman, and five firefighters. As of late 2024, Farsta brandstation is undergoing extensive renovations. These improvements aim to modernize the facilities and enhance their suitability for contemporary needs. The work is expected to last about a year and a half, with completion slated for spring 2026. During the renovation period, the station operates from temporary premises, situated behind the original building. So, as you stand here today, before the temporarily relocated Farsta brandstation, you stand on the grounds of a vital institution. It has served the community for decades. It continues to evolve to meet the ever-changing demands of fire and rescue services.
