Was Fannydal always a haven of charming villas? No. Fannydal in Nacka municipality boasts a rich history stretching back to the 1770s. Initially known as Solbasset or Solbaset it existed as a humble farmstead under the ownership of Järla gård. Life in Fannydal was far from the idyllic suburban setting we see today.

The area remained largely undeveloped until the late 19th century. The Mattsson family ran a laundry there adding a unique touch to Fannydal’s early days. Imagine the rhythmic clang of washboards echoing through the quiet countryside.

Then came significant change. AB de Lavals Ångturbin once owned Järla gård. They divided the surrounding lands. Gäddeviken Häst holmen Stora Nyckelviken Lilla Nyckelviken and Fannydal were all affected. The old farm was demolished in 1956. This made way for the modern villas and row houses that we see today.

The Fannydalsplatån the ridge between Järlasjön and Storaängen holds a special place in Fannydal’s story. It’s not just a pretty hill. This area once housed a World War II air defense position. Remnants of bunkers and defensive structures remain. They are a silent testament to the area’s past.

On Fannydalsplatån architect Ernst Grönwall designed and built a row house complex in the late 1950s. The fifty or so houses in six long rows still stand as a defining element of Fannydal’s character. These buildings showcase a specific style of mid-century modern architecture. They highlight the growth of the suburb after the war.

Today Fannydal enjoys its reputation as a desirable residential area. Its journey from a small farmstead to a thriving community is fascinating. The quiet streets and the lovely homes stand in contrast to its eventful past. This picturesque suburb tells a story of change. A story of how a peaceful landscape became a well-loved residential area. A journey from a simple farmstead to a sought-after suburb. This is Fannydal.
