Perhaps you did not know Fanling is more than just a town in Hong Kong. It is a place steeped in history and tradition. Let’s step back in time and explore Fanling Wai, a walled village that whispers tales of ancient clans and feng shui secrets.
Fanling is a shortened form of Fan Pik Leng. This area in the New Territories East of Hong Kong has a rich tapestry of stories waiting to be unraveled.
Our journey begins at the entrance of Fanling Wai. Here, you will see banners. These banners read: “In front lie the phoenix water! And behind, rest the dragon hills!” This imagery reflects the village’s fortunate location. It sits on a “phoenix site” according to feng shui principles.
Notice the fish pond. This pond was built to appease the phoenix. A feng shui master advised the villagers to build it. The master believed the nearby ridge, whose name sounded like “eagle”, might offend the phoenix. The pond serves as an ongoing reparation.
Now, look at the three old cannons. These cannons once defended Fanling Wai. During World War II, villagers buried them to keep them from the Japanese. They were rediscovered and put on display when the historic watchtowers were rebuilt.
Fanling Wai is the ancestral home of the Pang Clan. They were one of the New Territories’ largest settling clans. The Pang Clan arrived from Guangxi Province during the late Song Dynasty, between 1120 and 1280.
Fanling Town is the main settlement of the Fanling area. It includes Luen Wo Hui. This was the marketplace of Fanling before urban development. Wo Hop Shek is also part of Fanling Town. A public cemetery is located uphill here.
Fanling North is planned as one of three new development areas for North District, along with Ta Kwu Ling and Kwu Tung North.
Fanling offers a glimpse into Hong Kong’s past. From the strategic placement of the village to the defensive cannons. The story of Fanling Wai is a reminder of the traditions and resilience of its people. As we leave Fanling, remember the tale of the phoenix and the dragon. They watch over this village.
