Reducing travel times. That was one major goal when Fanling Highway was first envisioned.

Hello everyone. We are standing at a vital artery of Hong Kong. It is the Fanling Highway. This highway is more than just a road. It is a testament to Hong Kong’s growth. It showcases its strategic importance.

The story of Fanling Highway actually began long before it was named. Its predecessor was Tai Po Road – Tai Wo. It was built in the 1910s. Back then it was the only way to travel between Tai Po and the North District. This original road highlights its early significance.

Fast forward to the 1980s. The government began constructing the New Territories Circular Road. As part of this project the section north of Wai Tau Tsuen was divided. It became Tai Wo Service Road West and East. A new three-lane highway was added.

The section between So Kwun Po Road and Sheung Shui gained a special name. It was called Tai Po Road – Fanling. In 1991 it was officially renamed Fanling Highway.

The Fanling Bypass from Wo Hop Shek to Sheung Shui opened in 1985. The section from Lam Kam Road to Wo Hop Shek opened that same year. The section reaching Pak Shek Au opened in 1987. Finally the last section to San Tin Interchange opened in 1991. This marked the completion of the entire Fanling Highway.

Today Fanling Highway stretches for about 11.2 kilometers. It connects San Tin Highway and Tolo Highway. It is a dual two-lane expressway. Vehicles can travel at a speed limit of 100 kilometers per hour.

To handle increasing traffic a bus-bus interchange was built. It is near Ho Ka Yuen. Construction began in 2017. It opened in December 2018.

Fanling Highway is more than asphalt and concrete. It embodies Hong Kong’s progress. It reflects its commitment to efficient infrastructure. As we continue our journey think about the countless trips. Consider the connections made possible by this essential highway.
