How about stepping into a place where life meets science? That’s Fakultní nemocnice Motol. It is not just a hospital. It is the largest medical facility in the Czech Republic. It rivals some of the biggest in Europe.

Fakultní nemocnice Motol’s story began in 1943. During World War II, Prague needed more hospital beds. The original plans were scaled down due to the German occupation. A temporary barrack-style hospital was built in Motol. It was initially under the administration of Vinohrady Hospital.

Fast forward to today. Fakultní nemocnice Motol is a sprawling complex in Prague 5-Motol. It serves as a primary teaching base. Students come from the Second Faculty of Medicine at Charles University. Some also come from the First Faculty of Medicine.

The hospital boasts 2,410 beds. Annually, it treats 860,000 outpatients. It also cares for 70,000 inpatients. Almost 5,000 staff members keep this massive facility running.

The campus is divided into two main sections. There is an older “Children’s Hospital”. It dates back to the 1960s. A newer building houses adult patients. This part was built in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The adult section is sometimes called the “blue building”. Its iconic color had to be preserved during renovations.

Did you know Fakultní nemocnice Motol also plays a key role in crisis management? It is an important part of national and Prague-level emergency response plans. Within Prague, it is part of the trauma plan.

Getting here is easier than ever. Since 2015, Metro Line A has a station right at the hospital. The Nemocnice Motol station provides direct access to the complex. Bus lines also serve the area.

Inside Fakultní nemocnice Motol you will also find art. A stone sculpture depicts a mother and child. Bronze statues show mothers caring for children. There is also a group of sandstone animal sculptures.

Fakultní nemocnice Motol continues to evolve. New projects are underway. These include an administrative building for the Second Faculty of Medicine. Also in the works is a specialized oncology center. A simulation center for intensive care medicine is also planned.

From its humble beginnings as a wartime hospital, Fakultní nemocnice Motol has grown. It stands today as a beacon of medical excellence.
