Amidst the bustling energy of Arlington, Virginia, lies a hidden gem brimming with history and charm: Fairlington. Fairlington’s story begins in the 1940s. The Defense Homes Corporation, a part of the Federal Housing Administration, envisioned a haven for defense workers and their families amidst the tumult of World War II. Picture this: 1942, the world at war, and the Pentagon recently constructed. Just a short distance away, Fairlington rises, a beacon of hope and community. Originally called Seminary Heights, the name was changed to Fairlington, a blend of “Fairfax” and “Arlington,” the two counties it straddled at the time.

Fairlington became the largest housing project financed by the Defense Homes Corporation. Between 1942 and 1944, over 3,400 Colonial Revival-style townhouses and apartments sprang up. This made Fairlington the largest apartment complex in the nation during that era. The architects, Kenneth Franzheim and Alan B. Mills, crafted a unique blend of winding streets and clusters of homes, creating a sense of intimacy and community. The landscape architects carefully incorporated the existing trees and topography. Lush lawns and green spaces punctuated the clusters of homes. This gave the community a verdant feel from its earliest days. Imagine strolling down the gently curving streets, lined with brick and stone buildings, each with its own distinct character. The air is filled with the scent of blooming flowers, and children’s laughter echoes from the courtyards.

Fairlington was more than just housing. It was a thriving community. It quickly became a microcosm of American life, a place where families forged bonds and neighbors became friends. In the midst of global conflict, Fairlington offered a sense of stability and belonging. Interestingly, Fairlington’s land holds a rich history predating its World War II origins. Once home to a Necostin Indian village in the 17th century, it later became part of a plantation owned by John Carlyle, a friend of George Washington. George Washington himself even owned a portion of the land that would become Fairlington.

After the war, Fairlington transitioned from government-owned housing to privately owned apartments. Then, in a pivotal moment in 1972, Fairlington underwent a transformation. It became a condominium community, marking the largest such conversion in Virginia’s history. The conversion brought significant changes. Common basements were divided, boiler rooms were replaced with recreational facilities, and private courtyards emerged where once were shared spaces. Today, Fairlington stands as a testament to its rich and layered past. It is a vibrant blend of historical charm and modern convenience, where the echoes of wartime resilience intertwine with the dynamism of contemporary life. As you walk through Fairlington today, take a moment to appreciate its unique journey. From its origins as a wartime haven to its present-day status as a sought-after community, Fairlington’s story is a captivating slice of American history.
