Can you imagine a park at the heart of a political storm? Fairbank Memorial Park, right here on Dufferin Street, was almost erased from Toronto’s map. Today, it’s a vibrant green space with over nine acres of playing fields, a community recreation center, and even a swimming pool. But back in the 1980s, Fairbank Memorial Park was at the center of a political scandal that rocked the city. It involved secret deals, hefty bribes, and a land developer with his sights set on these very grounds. Local politicians, including York’s deputy mayor, Tony Mandarano, were caught in a web of corruption. They accepted over $100,000 in bribes to support a plan to demolish Fairbank Memorial Park and build condos. Another council member, Jim Fera, pocketed even more – a staggering $341,000. Their scheme was to push through a proposal that defied the city’s official plan and ignored public opinion. Thankfully, the truth came to light. Councilwoman Frances Nunziata bravely leaked information to the press, exposing the shady dealings. A police investigation followed, leading to the downfall of several politicians. Six of the eight council members involved lost their seats in the 1991 election. Mandarano and Fera faced justice, receiving prison sentences for their crimes. Thanks to Nunziata’s courage and the public outcry, Fairbank Memorial Park was saved. Today, we can enjoy its open fields, playground, and the refreshing Fairbank Outdoor Pool. So as you stroll through this park, remember its tumultuous past. It’s a testament to the power of community action and a reminder that green spaces like these are worth fighting for.
