How about uncovering a tale of faith, resilience, and community? We are standing before Fair Oaks Community Church. Its story began humbly with Bible studies in homes across Fairfax and Prince William Counties.
In 1910, Virginia “Virgie” Ritenour Kincheloe opened her home for Bible studies. She set the stage for a congregation rooted in community. Others from Washington D.C. joined them.
Fast forward to October 29 1941. The Dorcas Society was formed. This group met monthly supporting each other. They shared biblical knowledge. The ladies made quilts. They sent them to a retirement home in Oregon.
On February 14 1953, Fair Oaks Community Church was officially organized. It was first named the Washington D.C. Church of God. Alva Huffer chaired the meeting. Joseph Fletcher became its first full-time pastor.
The church moved to Falls Church in 1960. They rented space in Culmore Elementary School. Then in 1968, a significant moment occurred. Fair Oaks Community Church purchased this very building. It was from a local Presbyterian Church. Robert Costello discovered the availability of the building. The church finally had a permanent home. It changed its name to Eternal Hope Church of God.
Tragedy struck in February 1989. An arsonist set fire to the church. The building was destroyed. Yet the congregation’s spirit remained unbroken. They rebuilt and rededicated the church in 1990. Then in 1994, another arson attempt occurred. The damage was limited.
In 1995, Pastor Burnham resigned. He became the Comptroller of the Church of God General Conference. For about ten years, Fair Oaks Community Church continued without a full-time pastor. Pastor Dennis Baldwin served as interim.
In June 2005, Thomas J Fischhaber Jr became the new pastor. In July 2006, the congregation changed its name. It became Oak Hill Community Church of God. This reflected its location in Fairfax County. Later, the church decided to return to Fair Oaks Community Church of God in 2010.
Throughout its history, Fair Oaks Community Church has valued strong female leadership. The Dorcas Society played a vital role. The church consistently supports the General Conference. It supports the Virginia State Conference.
Today, Fair Oaks Community Church stands as a testament to faith. It embodies community. It shows resilience. It started from Bible studies in homes. It has grown into a pillar of the community. Fair Oaks Community Church continues its mission. It provides support. It promotes Christ-like living. It encourages others to accept Jesus Christ.
