“A bronze plaque. What story does it tell?”

Welcome to Fågelsöuddebadet. Right here on this beautiful beach lies a hidden tale of generosity and community. This isn’t just any swimming spot. It’s a legacy.

Fågelsöuddebadet a popular beach on Lidingö island in Stockholm. It boasts a long sandy beach. There are also bathing bridges and a diving tower. You’ll find a mini-golf course and a kiosk too. But the real story lies deeper than sun-kissed skin and happy squeals.

This haven of summer fun wasn’t always open to the public. Before 1933 it was private land. It was part of Elfvik farm. This farm was once owned by Albert Janse a former lieutenant colonel. He was also a member of Lidingö’s municipal council. Janse had a vision. He saw the potential of this spot. He dreamed of creating a public outdoor swimming area.

In 1932 Janse and his wife Elisabeth donated a large area of land to the city of Lidingö. It was 35 000 square meters of pure generosity. The following year Fågelsöuddebadet opened its doors. A place for everyone to enjoy the sun the water and the simple joy of swimming.

The bronze plaque you see there commemorates this act. It’s a silent testament to their vision. It sits on a granite stone. The inscription tells the story of their gift. Their donation ensured this space would remain a public free outdoor bath forever.

But Janse’s influence extends beyond the donation. He was instrumental in building support. He was instrumental in developing the idea of a public swimming area. He wanted to provide organized swimming lessons in a municipal setting. His dedication shaped Lidingö’s recreational landscape. He even donated land for one of Lidingö’s first schools.

So as you relax on the sand or take a refreshing dip remember the Janses. They weren’t just landowners. They were visionaries. They transformed a private cove into a community treasure. They showed the world how kindness and generosity could shape generations. Fågelsöuddebadet isn’t just a beach. It’s a living monument to the kindness of strangers. A story etched in bronze and whispered in the waves.
