Can you smell it? That faint, almost imperceptible tang in the air? That, my friends, is the subtle aroma of history, wafting from the Faculty of Chemistry, right here in Strasbourg. The Faculty of Chemistry isn’t just a building; it’s a living testament to Strasbourg’s pivotal role in the world of industrial chemistry. Located in the heart of the Upper Rhine area, this institution stands as a beacon of academic excellence. The Upper Rhine area, as some of you may know, was the birthplace of one of the world’s major industrial chemistry centers. The Faculty of Chemistry has inherited that legacy and continues to build upon it. The faculty isn’t just focused on the past though. It’s a dynamic hub for cutting-edge research, recognized internationally for its contributions to the field. This recognition is amplified by the associated Doctoral School of Chemical Sciences, further solidifying its prestigious standing. Here, within these walls, around 650 students each year embark on a journey of discovery. They’re guided by 62 dedicated teachers and lecturers, who impart knowledge rooted in a solid tradition. They foster a spirit of innovation, fueled by the ongoing research conducted in the faculty’s many active laboratories. This isn’t just about lectures and textbooks. The Faculty of Chemistry offers both undergraduate and graduate courses. These cover a diverse range of subjects, ensuring a comprehensive education for aspiring chemists. The research here is not confined to a single building. It sprawls across multiple campuses, including Esplanade, Cronenbourg, and Illkirch. Each campus houses specialized research units. These units delve into specific areas, like complex matter chemistry, supramolecular science, and even the design and application of bioactive molecules. Did you know the Faculty of Chemistry also supports a community of 260 doctoral students? These bright minds are the future of chemistry, pushing the boundaries of knowledge and innovation. They are supported by 36 doctoral students employed by the university itself, as well as 35 stand-in teachers, creating a vibrant academic environment. The Faculty of Chemistry is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a crucible of discovery, a place where the past meets the future. It is a symbol of Strasbourg’s enduring contribution to the world of science, a testament to the power of chemistry to shape our world.
