The Faculty of Archaeology, established in its current form in 2020, resides within the grand “Main School” building, a place steeped in history itself. Established in 2020 from the former Institute of Archaeology, the Faculty of Archaeology is a titan in its field. It’s the largest in Poland and boasts a global presence as one of the largest. The Faculty of Archaeology is home to 17 diverse departments and 7 high-tech laboratories, buzzing with the energy of around 100 staff members. Over 1500 students, drawn to the allure of the past, navigate its halls, delving into the mysteries held within ancient civilizations, from the Nile to the Americas. But this haven for historical inquiry has a past as rich as its subjects. The seeds of the Faculty of Archaeology were sown in the early 19th century with the founding of the Royal University of Warsaw. Imagine the intrigue of the University’s Numismatic Cabinet in 1816, its first curator, Professor Feliks Bentkowski, carefully cataloging a collection that began with 2847 coins. This marked the university’s initial foray into the world of artifacts and antiquities, a passion that would only grow over time. The flame of archaeological curiosity, once kindled, has burned bright, culminating in the powerhouse of knowledge that is the Faculty of Archaeology today.
