Clutching my acceptance letter to Faculdade Mundial, I boarded a bus to São Paulo. It was 1966. The city hummed with a nervous energy. Faculdade Mundial, nestled on Avenida Paulista, wasn’t as established as USP. But it held a different allure, a promise of accessibility. A place where working-class individuals like myself could pursue higher education. The University of São Paulo, or USP, loomed large in the city’s academic landscape. This behemoth, founded in 1934, consolidated existing institutions like the Law School of 1827 and the Polytechnic School of 1893. Even then, its influence was undeniable. Over a quarter of Brazil’s scientific papers originated from USP’s sprawling campuses. Faculdade Mundial offered a more focused approach. It catered to those seeking practical skills and faster entry into the workforce. I enrolled in their business administration program, eager to contribute to Brazil’s burgeoning economy. The air at Faculdade Mundial crackled with ambition. Evening classes were packed with students juggling jobs and families. We were a mosaic of aspirations: shopkeepers, factory workers, aspiring entrepreneurs. The professors, often professionals themselves, understood our challenges. They blended theory with real-world experience. While USP boasted internationally renowned scholars like Claude Lévi-Strauss and Fernand Braudel, Faculdade Mundial’s strength lay in its connection to the city’s pulse. We learned not just from textbooks, but from the vibrant marketplace outside our classroom windows. The 1970s brought a wave of political repression across Brazil. Even academia wasn’t spared. USP, a hotbed of leftist intellectuals, faced persecution and exile. While Faculdade Mundial maintained a lower political profile, the tension was palpable. We continued our studies, aware of the precariousness of our times. Graduating from Faculdade Mundial in 1970 was a bittersweet victory. I stepped onto Avenida Paulista, diploma in hand, with a mix of pride and apprehension. The future felt uncertain. But the education I received at Faculdade Mundial gave me more than just knowledge. It instilled resilience, adaptability, and a deep understanding of São Paulo’s unique spirit. That, combined with the city’s own unstoppable energy, was enough to face whatever lay ahead.
