Established in 1918 the Faculdade de Saúde Pública of the University of São Paulo stands before you. Its history is a testament to collaboration and innovation.

Initially a small Hygiene Laboratory a partnership between the São Paulo state government and the Rockefeller Foundation gave birth to this institution. The laboratory functioned as a chair within the Faculty of Medicine.

Four years later under the visionary leadership of Geraldo Horácio Paula Souza the Hygiene Laboratory transformed. It became the independent Instituto de Hygiene. This marked a shift towards a multidisciplinary approach to public health. A pioneering spirit was evident.

This multidisciplinary vision continued with the creation of Brazil’s first public health center. It served as a model for students in the country’s first Public Health specialization program. This wasn’t limited to doctors. It included engineers and other public health professionals.

Another groundbreaking achievement was Brazil’s first Nutrition undergraduate program. Professor Paula Souza established it in 1939. It aimed to improve the health of industrial workers through better nutrition.

By the 1950s the then-named School of Hygiene and Public Health played a crucial role in disease prevention and epidemic control. This included water fluoridation to reduce childhood cavities. Yaro Gandra’s research led to mandatory iodization of table salt. Extensive research and education combated tuberculosis.

Following Brazil’s return to democracy and the establishment of other public health institutions the school restructured its courses. The demand for sanitarians declined. However its role expanded into specialized fields like statistics providing crucial data for WHO/PAHO studies and occupational health.

Today this institution proudly bears the name Faculdade de Saúde Pública. Since 1969 it offers undergraduate programs in Nutrition and Public Health. Postgraduate programs in Nutrition and Public Health maintain the school’s commitment to interdisciplinary excellence. The Faculdade de Saúde Pública continues to contribute significantly to public health in Brazil.
