How quickly life can change. One moment a young pilot is soaring through the sky, the next he’s facing a tragic end. We are standing before the F-86 Sabre Jet Crash Site Memorial. It’s a somber reminder of a fateful day in 1954 when a routine training flight turned deadly. On February 12th, Lieutenant Lamar J. Barlow, a 25-year-old pilot stationed at McChord Air Force Base, took off in his F-86 Sabre Jet. He was on a routine instrument training mission. His destination was somewhere over Tacoma, Washington. Tragically, Barlow’s compass malfunctioned, leaving him disoriented and lost. Ground control attempted to guide him through the fog and rain using radar. However, a phenomenon known as a “radar ghost” appeared on their screens, misleading them about Barlow’s actual position. Believing Barlow to be over Tacoma, they directed him on a course that led him straight into the slopes of Grouse Mountain. The F-86 Sabre Jet, traveling at the speed of sound, slammed into the mountainside at 2,700 feet. The impact was catastrophic, killing Barlow instantly and scattering debris over a wide area. The F-86 Sabre Jet Crash Site Memorial stands as a testament to this tragedy. It also serves as a reminder of the bravery of individuals like Lieutenant Barlow, who risked their lives in service to their country.
