The Evangelische Stadtmission Windhoek’s story began in a time of immigration and seeking. After World War II, many Germans sought new lives in Southern Africa. They settled around Johannesburg and Pretoria, and also in Namibia. Around 1950, some Christians started meeting. They prayed for spiritual awakening among the immigrants.
In 1959, five families near Johannesburg began holding Bible studies in German. This small beginning grew. In 1966, the Pilgermission St. Chrischona sent a missionary to support this work. Visits, camps, and adventure trips built connections. The circle of interested people widened.
By 1970, the work had expanded so much that a second missionary arrived. He founded the first Stadtmission in South Africa in Johannesburg. Many German speakers found faith in Jesus Christ. A vibrant community began to form.
The vision soon expanded beyond South Africa. Evangelistic trips and Bible studies reached Namibia. In 1977, the Evangelische Stadtmission Windhoek was founded. The Pilgermission St. Chrischona and other congregations supported this growing work. More missionaries were sent to serve.
The Evangelische Stadtmission Windhoek is part of a larger network. It is connected to the Evangelische Stadtmission im Südlichen Afrika ESSA. ESSA has locations in South Africa and Namibia. These include Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria, Vanderbijlpark, Swakopmund and Windhoek.
Today, the Evangelische Stadtmission Windhoek is a thriving church. Around 150 people attend services each week. The church connects with about 350 people regularly. It is a multi-generational community. People from all walks of life find a place here. Families, young adults, and seniors all gather.
