The grand red brick building stands before you, its strong facade reflecting the warmth of the summer sun. This is the Evangelische Kirche Weiden, a landmark in the heart of Cologne-Weiden. This church has stood witness to the changing landscape of the city, its stories woven deeply into the fabric of this community. It served as a place of solace and refuge for those who had lost their homes and families during the Second World War. Many of the families seeking a new life settled here, drawn to the welcoming embrace of the church. The church was originally a restaurant called “St. Florian.” The evangelical community purchased it in 1930 for a bargain price, and it was then renovated and transformed into a house of worship. You can see the remnants of the restaurant’s history in the building’s architecture. After years of growth and expansion, the parish was finally given its independence from the Frechen church in 1948. In 1978, the building underwent further expansions and renovations, and the community center was added, named after the theologian and writer Jochen Klepper. Klepper was a prominent figure in the church who used his words to spread hope and faith, even in dark times. Today, the church and community center are bustling with activity, hosting services, concerts, lectures, and gatherings for families and individuals. It continues to be a hub of faith and community, carrying on the legacy of those who built it and those who continue to call it home.
