What echoes through the halls of the Evangelisch Methodistische Kirche in Zurich? The Evangelisch Methodistische Kirche, or EMK, isn’t just a building. It represents a vibrant community, a part of the larger Methodist movement that spans the globe. The EMK in Switzerland has a unique history, tracing its roots back to three distinct branches. The first Methodist congregation in Switzerland was established in Lausanne in 1840, thanks to the efforts of the British Wesleyan Methodist community. Then, in 1856, the Swiss branch of the Methodist Episcopal Church, originating from the United States, began its work. That same year, gatherings of up to 400 people took place right here in Zurich, in the hall of the Zunft zur Waag. A third branch, the Evangelische Gemeinschaft, started its work around 1866. These three streams eventually converged in 1968, forming the Evangelisch Methodistische Kirche as we know it today. The church is organized as an association, with its headquarters located in Zurich. It’s part of a larger network, belonging to the Annual Conference of Switzerland-France-North Africa and the Central Conference of Central and Southern Europe. This means the EMK Zurich is connected to Methodist communities across thirteen countries, from Albania to Hungary. Currently, the EMK in Switzerland boasts around 100 congregations and approximately 4,500 members. The leadership structure is also intriguing. Overseeing the Central and Southern European region, and thus Switzerland, is Bishop Stefan Zürcher. He was elected and consecrated in 2022, officially taking office in February 2023.
